DARPA-Funded Big Dog Robot Moves Almost Like a Real Dog

Check out this DARPA prototype of a 4-legged robot that can navigate rugged, complex and slippery terrain. It is very odd to see something so alive moving around so normally minus a head, lungs and tail. Expect this product to soon be adapted for war, entertainment and then eventually commercial purposes. (Props to mathew ingram for the awesome and, as he puts it, creepy link.)

How soon do you expect to own a robot dog?

  1. That is SO WEIRD!! It looks kind of like 2 human pairs of legs, one forwards and one backwards.

  3. That is weird – also incredible. The progress being made in robot ambulation is amazing. You can really feel the acceleration in the development of animated robots picking up speed.

  5. It’s evocative of the bio-mimicry seen in Star Wars and other flix.

  6. yea i think the noise is def the creepiest part, that and the slow shot of it falling on the ice. I swear if they use this structure and adapt it to make a robo-spider, I’m taking to the hills…
