Garbage and hazardous waste are becoming valuable energy feedstocks, thanks to researchers from Ukraine, Russia, and Israel. Even low level radioactive wastes, medical wastes, and toxic wastes can be converted to useful products and energy, using a new high temperature plasma reactor.

There is no need for the world to drown in a sea of garbage and toxic waste. We do not need to pollute the oceans, groundwater, or air. Being smart about toxic waste is just another way of using our most valuable resource-our brains!

Environmental Energy Resources Ltd. (EER) of Israel, is working with researchers in Russia, the Ukraine, the US, and other nations, to make sure that the future environment of Earth will be as pristine as the pre-industrial Earth.

The new reactor uses a process called “Plasma Gasification Melting Technology” (PGM) which was developed by scientists at two Russian research institutes (Kurchatov and Radon Institutes) and at Israel’s Technion Institute.

PGM Technology is suitable for the treatment of a variety of waste types:

(cont.)

- Municipal Solid Waste (MSW)

- Low and Intermediate Radioactive Waste (LILRW)

- Medical Waste (MW)

- Industrial Waste (IW)

- Automotive Shredded Residues (ASR)

- Hazardous Materials Waste (HW)

- Effluent-Treatment Sludge (ETS)

The highest rate of volume reduction, residues inertization, solidification and immobilization, important not only in the treatment of hazardous wastes (MW, LILRW etc.) and the efficient energy recovery as well as overall environmental characteristics such as benign residues and the lowest permissible emissions in the treatment of MSW and other wastes, are the unique qualities of this PGM Technology.

High temperature plasma treatment of hazardous waste appears to solve two important problems of modern industrial societies:

1) Dealing with hazardous wastes such as industrial, medical, and radioactive waste.

2) Producing clean energy.

To top it off, this process also creates safe, useful construction materials.

I can hear some people saying: “This is not exciting. This is garbage and toxic waste!” Exactly. Let us use our brains so that turning toxic and radioactive waste into valuable and useful products becomes merely an everyday approach to leaving this place cleaner than we found it.

  1. This is indeed amazing. If we could turn nuclear by-products into valuable resources then we’ve killed two huge birds with one stone and incentivized the clean-up of some nasty messes. If this takes off, it will be a big win-win technology. Go human brains!!!
